Robert Gale, by his will of 4th July 1612, left £20 per annum to the Vintners' Company for a dinner every two years on a quarter day in Lent. The first dinner to be two years after the death of his wife. This dinner was known as the Lent Dinner.

Albert Evan Bernays, who died 8th October 1960, was a great lover of the City of London and especially of its Livery Companies being a Freeman of the Carpenters', Stationers' and Vintners' Companies. He was intrigued by the idea of the Lenten Dinner and, by his will, left the Company a number of shares, the income from which was to supplement Robert Gale's gift.
